Glam Rock 2002
Welcome to the last news of 2001, I hope
everyone had a great (Re)Xmas. Many thanks for your great support, the
number of visitors of this website is constantly growing and your nice
comments and good suggestions are very encouraging to continue. The last
years proved that glam has never really been away - just one example, the
phenomenal success of the "Billy Elliott" soundtrack introduced Marc Bolan´s
songs to a new young unsuspecting audience. 2002 certainly will be
a great glam year again with new albums from Sparks,
Suede,
The
Ark, David Bowie and many
others. Hopefully more classic albums will be reissued on CD for the first
time, most desired are the 2 Jobriath albums. But the possibility of such
desired releases is also due to your interest and energetic persistence
(see the Iron Virgin news from November).
Now, what is there to expect from www.glam-rock.de
in the future? At the moment there is work on 2 new sections, one is about
classic and new video / DVD footage and releases. You will have noticed
that the DVD format has established massively worldwide during the past
2 years and also brought us interesting new glam releases. Then there will
be a section on recommended releases by year, going backwards from 2001.
So everyone, have a great glam-rockin´
New Years Eve - see you again in 2002.
T.Rex
There will be at least 2 new albums of
previously unheard Marc Bolan material in 2002. The Official Marc Bolan
Fan Club secured the rights to the "Electric Warrior
Suite" which will contain different versions of the well-known
album tracks, but also a previously unreleased song called "Electric Warrior".
Hopefully we will also hear the results
for the third masterpiece from Thunderwing Productions,
who already impressed us with the exceptional "Bump´n
Grind" and "Shadowhead"
releases during the last 2 years.
David Bowie
ISO is the name of David´s new own
record label. Bowie quit Virgin / EMI because of disappointment over the
way his recent releases were promoted and marketed. So his next album which
will be a new collaboration with Mr. Tony Visconti (!) seems to become
the first release on ISO which will be based in London and New York.

Iron Virgin
This Glamrock band from Scotland did not
produce a large number of releases in the Seventies, but nowadays their
original Deram singles are some of the most sought-after items among collectors,
especially the classic "Rebels Rule".
This treasure of a song is a must for every glam fan. Now there is another
chance to listen to the band´s recordings through their website
set up by I.V.´s guitarist Gordon Nicol which also includes a brief
band history, rare photos and even information on unreleased recordings.
One can only hope that all Iron
Virgin recordings will appear on CD one day and actually it
is up to you if this project becomes a reality: Universal Music might
be open-minded for a possible release if there is enough interest so we
would like to ask all of you: stand up for Rebel Rule and send emails to
rory.johnston@umusic.com
and demand the Iron Virgin CD !
Mick Ronson
Over the past 3 years 3 albums of previously
unreleased and/or live material, namely "Showtime",
"Just Like This" and "Indian
Summer" have been released by NMC in the UK. A set of exactly
these 3 CDs entitled "The Burning Collection"
(NMC BURNINGBOX1) (no further bonus material this time) is now available.
Sigue Sigue Sputnik
After the successful Euro-tour last September
more dates have been added for December. Also Sigue Sigue Sputnik will
work on a new album in 2002, so "Pirate Space"
fortunately was not just a one-off comeback release. The new concert dates
will be in the tour list soon, or check their official website www.sputnikworld.com
.
Alice
Cooper
The new Alice Cooper album "DragonTown"
did very well in the charts all over the planet. Fans are kept busy - not
just with this new CD coming comparably soon after last year´s "Brutal
Planet" and the live DVD "Brutally Live", not to mention various collectors´
editions. There is a welcome return of the excellent documentary "Prime
Cuts" on DVD, the original video has been deleted for a long
time now.
This time "Prime
Cuts" comes as a double-DVD featuring the material known from
the video plus new interview and live footage, as well as a "jukebox" where
you practically can select all Alice Cooper songs which are presented with
Alice´s comments and there is a "Coopergame" etc. The DVD set
comes in a special foldable cover continuing the tradition of beautiful
Alice Cooper covers, like we could see on the "Billion
Dollar Babies" reissue and the 1999 box set most recently.

Suede
Bad news for those who are already looking for the reissues of the first 4 albums - these have postponed to a future release with no concrete date as remastering and compiling the bonus material takes more time than expected.
But there is more than a consolation: on
November 26th the first DVD collection of Suede videos will see the light
of day in the UK and Europe (a VHS version might appear later). "Lost
In TV" not only will include the well-known clips - each one
with comments from the bandmembers and an karaoke-option... - but also
rare stuff like the different Australian version of "Can´t
Get Enough", the U.S. promo of "The
Drowners", a 1995 performance of the Elvis Costello song "Shipbuilding"
plus the completely new song "Simon"
(from the film "Far From China"). Altogether it sounds like a superb release
both for fans and those of you who have not been into this top band of
"New Glam" (or "Future Glam") yet.
Roxy Music
The band has just played the final show
of their extremely successful reunion world tour in London. The concert
at the Hammersmith Apollo has been filmed for forthcoming DVD / Video /
live CD releases.
Gary Glitter
This one is quite a surprise, Gary Glitter
releases a new CD called "On" which
contains 12 tracks, 9 of them are brand new songs. A little less surprising
is the fact that it is currently exclusively available at his website.
The Old Grey Whistle Test
To commemorate the 30th anniversary of
this legendary music programme the BBC recently released a 2 DVD set filled
with original footage of the series. Interesting for glam fans are performances
of Alice Cooper ("Under My Wheels"), Roxy Music ("Do The Strand"), New
York Dolls ("Jet Boy") and Iggy Pop (I´m Bored). Sadly some of the
mostly desired footage - i.e. early 70s David Bowie, Sparks and Golden
Earring appearances - is missing here. One can only hope for a volume
2.
Placebo
This week (Oct. 8th) Placebo release "Black-Eyed", the 4th single of their smash album "Black Market Music". Tracks are:
1 Black-Eyed - 3.45
2 Pure Morning (MBV Remix)
- 3.55
3 Black-Eyed (Placebo Vs.
Le Vibrator Mix) - 7.09
Check the Placebo website on October 18th
at 9.30 pm (UK time) for a live webcast of their sold-out show at London´s
Brixton Academy.
Alice Cooper
The latest attraction in Phoenix / Arizona
is a "haunted house" called "Alice Cooper´s
Nightmare" which is still open until November 3rd. Included
are many requisites such as the guillotine. All infos on the location,
opening times, admission etc. you will find at www.frightened.com
